The Problem with Vented Crawl Spaces
Crawl space insulation on Long Island is not a discretionary upgrade — it is a building-envelope repair. Homes in Nassau and Suffolk County sit on sandy and clay-mix soils that constantly push moisture vapor upward through unprotected dirt floors. Without crawl space encapsulation, that vapor load migrates into the floor system, saturates fiberglass batts, and creates the conditions for wood rot, pest damage, and mold growth that eventually shows up as air-quality complaints on the first floor. A properly sealed crawl space with a vapor barrier, closed-cell spray foam on the foundation walls, and a dehumidifier eliminates these problems permanently and typically pays for itself in lower heating and cooling bills within four to six years.
